What is Circuit Bending?
It's education through exploration. Circuit Bending is the art of modifying existing electronics, usually children's toys, guitar effects, inexpensive battery-powered musical instruments, etc. to create unique musical instruments. By adding additional electronic components, wire patches, switches, contact points, photo sensors, potentiometer... to control new connections within the device's pre-existing circuitry you can achieve higher interactive experimental levels of new voices.

Everyone will leave with a working "Synth Kitty" toy that they will be given at the start of the workshop.
Soldering is handy for hobby electronics, jewelry making and more. I will introduce you to the different types of soldering as you make a "Kitty Synth" kit that has an IC chip to power a 1/2 watt amp for the enclosed speaker. These self powered "Kitties" can sound off on their own!

You will learn the basic "how to" of:
* Soldering, Exploring and naming electronic components
* Populating a PCB (printed circuit board)
* Transferring electronics into the Kitty skin

Circuit Bending at TekVenture, Grab the Screw Driver!
In this workshop we will study one of the simplest types of bend, finding a resistor within a circuit that controls the clock speed of the chip and replacing it with a potentiometer. Once bEnT you'll be able to crush the sound of the toy to BITS!

Some of the toys will require the removal of their electronics to be reused in more suitable plastic enclosure. Everyone will leave with a working bEnT toy that they will be given at the start of the workshop.

Circuit Bending Workshop & Performance at the Columbus Idea Foundry:
In this workshop we will study one of the simplest types of bend, finding a resistor within a circuit that controls the clock speed of the chip and replacing it with a potentiometer. Once bEnT you'll be able to crush the sound of your voice to BITS or make it sound like a high pitched chipmunk! We'll also be adding a speaker and microphone jack to better record and hear back your recordings.
We'll be performing this bending technique on a simple voice recorder circuit that is easy to understand. Plus you'll also learn useful tricks and basic electronics so you can further continue to perform operations on your own toys!

Join the Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the first Circuit Benders' Ball Columbus, a one-day event that celebrates the gentle art of tearing apart your electronic toys and gadgets and reconfiguring them into a musical instrument or artwork.
